THE NATURE PLACE
Colorado Conference Center
This page is designed to help you prepare for your stay — what to expect at elevation, how to care for your body, and what to pack so you’re comfortable in all conditions:
WELCOME AND
What to Expect
We’re excited to host you at our mountain retreat, located at approximately 9,000 feet above sea level. This high-alpine setting offers breathtaking views, fresh air, and countless opportunities to connect with nature. With a little preparation, you’ll be able to fully enjoy both your program and the surrounding environment.
Understanding High Elevation
At 9,000 feet, your body may need time to adjust. Most guests feel great, but it’s common to notice:
- Shortness of breath during physical activity
- Increased fatigue
- Mild headaches
- Dry skin or lips
Staying Comfortable & Well
Hydrate early and often: Drink more water than you normally would, starting a few days before arrival. Take it slow at first: Allow your body time to adjust, especially during the first 24–48 hours.
- Eat regularly. Balanced meals help maintain energy.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine. These can contribute to dehydration.
- Moisturize skin and lips regularly
- Prioritize sleep and rest
- Eat nourishing meals
- Dress for changing conditions
- Listen to your body. Rest when needed and communicate with staff if you’re not feeling well.
Our staff is experienced in supporting guests at elevation and are always available to help.
Weather & Outdoor Conditions
Mountain weather can change quickly and often differs from forecasts at lower elevations. Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be cool, and sudden rain or wind is possible.
You may experience:
- Warm sunshine during the day
- Cool or chilly evenings
- Wind exposure on trails and open areas
- Occasional rain or storms
- Being prepared with layers is key to staying comfortable.
What to Wear
Layering is Essential. We recommend packing clothing that can be layered and adjusted throughout the day.
Mid-layers: Fleece, light sweaters, or insulated jackets
Outer layers: Waterproof or wind-resistant jacket
Pants: Comfortable pants suitable for walking and sitting outdoors
Sleepwear: Warm pajamas for cooler nights
Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable shoes for walking on trails or uneven ground. Closed-toe shoes are recommended
Accessories: Hat for sun protection or warmth, Sunglasses (UV exposure is stronger at elevation), Warm socks, Gloves (season-dependent, but often helpful)
What to Pack
In addition to clothing, consider bringing:
- Reusable water bottle (very important at elevation)
- Sunscreen & lip balm (sun exposure is stronger at 9,000 feet)
- Daypack or small backpack for outdoor activities
- Personal medications
- Toiletries & personal comfort items
- Notebook or journal
- Camera or phone to capture the scenery
- Trekking poles for hikes
- Swimsuit (if applicable to your program)
