The Nature Place Lodge has hosted innumerous business conferences, family reunions, and leadership development programs through the years since opening in 1978. An original structure to the property, the Lodge’s charm remains as the social center for our guests. We’ve been fortunate to maintain the Lodge with modern renovations and grow with the desires of our visitors; all the while keeping the serenity of surrounding pine forests the focal point of a stay at The Nature Place.

Upstairs, entering from the west, a sunny open-space corridor welcomes guests into a cozy seating area across from our front desk and main office. Windows lining the south and easterly views of the ranch property, allow guests quick views of their lodging accommodations, or a long look through the foothills towards Pikes Peak. The space surrounding the welcome area often serves as a reception or ‘happy hour’ station for groups from 10 to 50 people. Guests choose an arrangement to entertain themselves while taking in good company and mountain merriment.

The upper level then transitions into our main dining area from the southside reception space. Here we host our buffet line, packed lunch stations, and breakfast bar. Central to the Lodge layout, our food and sharing meals together is an essential portion of a guest stay at The Nature Place. Our kitchen staff prides itself on wholesome, nutritious meals to energize and satiate an appetite for a visit to the mountains.

While guests choose from the buffet line, the eastern entry and exit of the Pike’s Peak deck offers some of the best views on the Colorado Outdoor Education Center property. A highlight for the 2022 season is the renovation of the Pike’s Peak deck, which adds an additional 125 square feet from our previous space. Guests often find themselves gravitating toward the majestic scenery of a sunrise, midday snack among woodland creatures, or a colorful sunset to enjoy a memorable meal outdoors together.

To the northside of the buffet area is the formal dining space with the capacity to seat 135 guests comfortably. Inspired by the German Bavarian style, Sandy and Laura infused a flare of European culture through layout and exposed beam architectural features. Squaretop tables form rows for a large banquet experience. Windows line the main dining area with an elevated view of the surrounding Ponderosa forest and westward vistas of the central Colorado foothills. The views and our food complement one another to make one of many lasting memories from The Nature Place’s charming ambience.

After a well deserved meal, guests often partake in evening social programming in the Lodge’s lower level. The downstairs area is designed to be partitioned into thirds, depending on the guests’ desired use of the space. Amenities on the lower level include: a library of natural history and literature, baby grand piano, small business center equipped with a computer and printer, lounge space with TV/AV hookups, ping pong and pool tables, and an additional seating area with expansive natural lighting. The Lodge’s fireplace also extends down to the basement to provide additional comfort during inclement or winter weather.

We hope this paints a better picture of a stay at The Nature Place Lodge and the memorable experiences you can expect. We encourage you to ask about available dates on our calendar to book your group’s conference or retreat with us today!

What is Leave No Trace?

Leave No Trace is a non-profit organization that endeavors to educate the public to properly care for the outdoors. With the support of extensive research, Leave No Trace introduced a framework of ethics and best practices for us all to follow in order to protect the natural environment when we are using it for outdoor activities. This framework is broken in seven easy to follow principles we should apply to any outdoor recreation, whether it be hiking, rock climbing, biking, camping, fishing or anything in between. The purpose behind educating the public and those managing public lands is to not only prevent the need for costly restoration programs, but also to protect the environment and natural resources for future generations.

What are the Seven Principles?

Leave No Trace’s Seven Principles is a framework designed to help us make responsible decisions when exploring the outdoors; ensuring we continue to enjoy and protect land we visit. The seven principles are:

Plan ahead and prepare

Travel and camp on durable surfaces

Dispose of waste properly

Leave what you find

Minimize campfire impacts (be careful with fire)

Respect wildlife

Be considerate of other visitors

The Leave No Trace organization explains these Seven Principles in-depth with valuable advice if you want to learn more about each for your next adventure.

Leave No Trace at The Nature Place

Our community members here not only at The Nature Place, but also the collective Colorado Outdoor Education Center, are strong advocates for Leave No Trace. We believe in the seven principles, which align with the underlying philosophy of our mission.

“Our mission is to provide uncompromising customer service, quality accommodations and food, and educational programs that enhance a sense of self, sense of community, sense of Earth, sense of wonder, to help your sense of the future. We define customer service as a relentless pursuit of excellence in communication, follow-through and in exceeding expectations.”

The Outdoor Foundation discovered in their 2021 Outdoor Participation Trends Report that the number of people getting outdoors has grown more than 3 percent annually in the last three years. Not only is this a staggering figure, but 2020 saw the highest participation rates ever recorded 7.1 million more Americans getting outdoors. What do these numbers mean to us? They reinforce the importance of educating people of all ages and walks of life about the importance of properly caring for the natural world. Here at The Nature Place, we actively demonstrate the seven principles of Leave No Trace. You will notice if you’ve stayed with us or read on our website that some of our own key principles reflect these as well.

We strive to continuously learn of new techniques and technologies we can introduce or upgrade in order to improve our stewardship of the business and responsibility to the land.

Learning from the Natural World – Our ‘Leadership Perspective’ program has been designed to provide valuable views on the natural world. We offer our guests access to a full-time naturalist, and the opportunity to be led on nature hikes to learn more about our fauna and flora, Colorado geology, and astronomy.

Building Construction and Remodeling – We recently completed the remodeling of our original apartment suites through the concise use of sustainable practices and materials. We incorporated recycled content carpet, Low E windows, and energy efficient heaters into the apartments. Our Sportsplex facility and three other buildings produce a percentage of our electricity from photovoltaic panels. As opportunities to upgrade our facilities arise, we continue to discover the most sustainable practices to solve our needs.

Land and Forest Restoration – Since 2005, we have worked with the State of Colorado Forest Service, Pike National Forest and the Coalition of the Upper South Platte to mitigate over 160 acres of forest to successfully improve the forest health and reduce wildfire risk. As time and opportunity allow, we are utilizing more Xeriscape practices in our landscaping on campus in order to reduce our water usage and to be more sustainable.

Green Purchasing – We make environmentally conscious product purchases where possible. Our kitchen purchases organic and local foods when requested by a group, and any paper towels, cups, or napkins are made of 100% recycled material. In addition, we use non-toxic and biodegradable cleaning products, and chlorine-free projects when possible and appropriate. Our Housekeeping use Greenworks cleaning products, and our commercial launders use 100% biodegradable detergent. The Nature Place buys in bulk to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as using LED light bulbs where possible to avoid CFLs, installing timers on our exterior lighting, and purchasing energy star approved appliances.

Recycling – Along with the effort of the entire COEC community, The Nature Place recycles cardboard, aluminum, cans, paper, glass, plastic, computers, and scrap metal. We repurpose any worn towels, mattresses, blankets and linens when we can.

Meet Elizabeth Marable (better known as Izzy to everyone around here) who is Colorado Outdoor Education Center’s (COEC) Executive Director. Elizabeth joined our nonprofit organization almost 20 years ago and it is safe to say that she is familiar with not only The Nature Place, but also Sanborn Western Camps and High Trails Outdoor Education Center – all three programs that comprise COEC.

How did she get here, you might ask. It was acutally Levi, Elizabeth’s now husband, who introduced her to the camp. Levi worked both with the High Trails Outdoor Education Center and Sanborn Western Camps programs for several seasons more than 20 years ago. It was the stories he shared, the incredible people, and the amazing experiences that were created for campers, students and staff here, that were more than enough to convince her to move from the planes of Kansas to the mountains of Colorado to see for herself what it was all about. Elizabeth joined the High Trails summer camp program as a Counselor in Kinnikinnik the summer of 2002, and then continued into the fall working with the 6th grade students in the High Trails Outdoor Education Center Program.

When the fall season ended, she headed to Steamboat Springs in northern Colorado to work at a bed & breakfast, something that had always piqued her interest. Whilst there, Elizabeth quickly learned that she loved skiing and the Colorado winter, but that the ski town life wasn’t her passion and owning a bed & breakfast might need to wait until later in life. Instead, she felt a strong pull to return to COEC and continue working with campers and students.

She found her place here in a variety of roles; Ridge Leader, Director of the Junior Program, a Field Instructor with High Trails Outdoor Education Center, and in 2013 she became Co-Director of High Trails before transitioning to her current role as Executive Director in the fall of 2020. She has also served on the Rocky Mountain Local Counsel of Leaders for the American Camp Association as the Professional Development Chair and is co-author with Jane Sanborn of 101 Nature Activities For Kids.

Elizabeth’s love for the outdoors, in addition to her passion for connecting with people, has been a key factor in her commitment to COEC. Growing up, Elizabeth spent her summers travelling. Her parents were both teachers and had their summers off, so they would spend a month on the road at a time exploring State and National Parks, museums and Capitol Buildings. Despite where they were on the road, they would always choose to camp each night rather than opting for a hotel. Elizabeth attributes her passion for being amidst and caring for the natural world to how her parents raised her. Education was always of interest, except it was the closed walls of a classroom that kept her from wanting to become a teacher in a school setting. It wasn’t until her experience at COEC that she realized she “could teach and it didn’t have to be in the classroom.” Her involvement in this organization allowed her to embrace the best of both worlds: education and the outdoors.

It comes as no surprise that her current role as Executive Director carries substantial responsibility. One of Elizabeth’s goals is to stay true to Sandy and Laura Sanborn’s original mission and vision. Keeping their aspirations in focus at all times is honored by ensuring that all programming is aligned with COEC’s mission, vision and core values.

Her style of leadership and tenure proved valuable in navigating COEC through the pandemic. COVID-19 presented, and continues to present, challenges for COEC and its community. Despite having to navigate uncertainty, Elizabeth has ensured the organization continues to move forward. This optimism was key in resuming the programming at The Nature Place, both summer camps, and the High Trails Outdoor Education Program successfully in 2021. Elizabeth says she is excited to once again create opportunities for people to continue to return to The Nature Place, to reconnect with returning clients, and to develop new relationships with future clients.

She is excited to continue to collaborate with and support Martie Jones, the Director of the Nature Place, and all the staff to continue to constitute a sustainable, relevant and current conference center that continues to provide exceptional opportunities for people to connect with the natural world and with others. She strongly believes it is the sense of belonging that is created at The Nature Place that allows for people to slow down, to have quality time with each other, and to discover things about themselves and about the groups they’re here with, as well as the natural world around them.

We are grateful to have such an experienced leader, and look forward to further supporting Elizabeth in carrying out Sandy and Laura’s vision for generations to come.

The poem Summons by Robert Francis is loved by Elizabeth for many reasons. “On a personal level I feel like this is how my parents instilled a sense of wonder and awe for the natural world in my siblings and me. I also think it is what we do for our campers in the summer, our students in Outdoor Ed, our clients at The Nature Place, and for our staff.”

Summons

Keep me from going to sleep too soon

Or if I go to sleep too soon

Come wake me up. Come any hour

Of the night. Come whistling up the road.

Stomp on the porch. Bang on the door.

Make me get out of bed and come

And let you in and light a light.

Tell me the northern lights are on

And make me look. Or tell me clouds

Are doing something to the moon

They never did before, and show me.

See that I see. Talk to me till

I’m half as wide awake as you

And start to dress wondering why

I ever went to bed at all.

Tell me the waking is superb.

Not only tell me but persuade me.

You know I’m not too hard persuaded.
